Tawaf

As part of the etiquette of entering Makkah, what should we do before performing tawaf?

The acts are as follows:

(1) Upon reaching Makkah, rest for a while in a convenient place so that fatigue is removed and strength is regained. Moreover, it is essential to be clean and pure before tawaf. (Bukhari)

(2) If possible, it is mustahabb to perform ghusl. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to do so. (Bukhari) If there is no opportunity, it may be omitted. However, one must certainly purify oneself from ritual impurity.

(3) If feasible, it is also mustahabb to enter Makkah through the highland area. (Bukhari) It is preferable to enter through the “Bab al-Salam” gate. If that is not possible, you may enter through any gate.

(4) When entering the Haram Sharif, it is preferable to enter with the right foot first and recite the following supplication:

And when leaving Masjid al-Haram, recite:

It is Sunnah to recite these supplications in all other mosques throughout the world as well.

(5) The tahiyyah of “Masjid al-Haram” is to perform tawaf. If you do not intend to perform tawaf, never sit in the mosque without first performing two rak‘ahs of salah. However, if the congregational prayer has begun, join the congregation directly.

(6) It is permissible for sick and excused persons to perform tawaf or sa‘i while being carried on a litter. (Bukhari)

(7) The first tawaf is called “Tawaf al-Qudum”

(طواف القدوم) or “Tawaf al-Umrah.”
