1. Hajj performed with money earned through unlawful means is not accepted by Allah. When such a person says “Labbayk,” Allah rejects his Labbayk. He says, “There is no Labbayk for you, nor any glad tidings for you. Your provisions are unlawful, your wealth is unlawful, and your Hajj is ghayr mabrur—unacceptable.”[1] Accordingly, the first preparation for Hajj should be to meet your own and your family’s needs through lawful earnings and to save every penny for Hajj entirely from lawful income and wealth. If you cannot earn enough lawful money to go for Hajj, Hajj will not be obligatory upon you. It is not the case that you must go for Hajj regardless. Rather, Hajj becomes obligatory only when, after meeting the essential needs of your household, you have the money required to perform it. Therefore, never plan to perform Hajj with unlawful money. If all your wealth is unlawful, then repent. Abandon unlawful means and begin earning wealth through lawful means. Resolve never to return to unlawful means. Only when you have eventually saved the necessary lawful money should you make the intention to perform Hajj.

2. If you have any debts, repay them before performing Hajj. However, if you are a major businessman for whom taking on debt is a daily practice or necessity, then prepare a separate will concerning all your debts. Entrust responsibility for this matter to those who will be your heirs or successors.

3. Whether you are travelling under the balloti or non-balloti system, try to take an additional twenty to thirty thousand taka beyond the amount you are charged. If possible, take even more. In addition to spending this money when necessary—such as when a compensatory sacrifice becomes obligatory because of a mistake—use it to provide hospitality to fellow pilgrims, help needy pilgrims, and so forth. You should also keep extra money on hand so that, if you become hungry or thirsty, you can obtain the necessary food and drink without being miserly. Moreover, you may feel that buying gifts for relatives is also necessary, so you may take extra money for that as well.

4. Keep your money in a safe place. Do not keep all your money together in your waist belt. You may keep it in your bag or, if they are trustworthy, deposit it with the hotel owner or at the muallim’s office and obtain a receipt. Do not take a large amount of money with you to Mina and Arafat either. This is because some people, under the guise of Hajj, look for opportunities to steal money amid the crowds. Protect your money from falling into their hands.
