What is the ruling on performing Umrah?

According to the Hanafi and Maliki schools of thought, performing Umrah is Sunnah. According to the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools of thought, performing Umrah is obligatory. That is, Umrah is also obligatory for anyone upon whom Hajj is obligatory.
