Hajj becomes obligatory when all of the following conditions are fulfilled:
(1) Being a Muslim. No act of worship performed while one is a non-Muslim is accepted by Allah.
(2) Having reached puberty.
(3) Possessing reason and intellect. That is, acts of worship are not incumbent upon an unconscious or insane person.
(4) Possessing financial and physical ability. Financial ability means that, after bearing the expenses of Hajj, one must have sufficient wealth and means to continue supporting one's family. Along with physical health, having access to transportation, safety of the route, and, in the case of a woman, having a mahram man accompany her are also included within the meaning of ability. If any one of these is lacking, Hajj will not be obligatory.
