The main rites of Hajj begin on 8 Dhul-Hijjah. A person who has come with the intention of performing Hajj, if performing Tamattu‘, will already have completed ‘Umrah. Now he only has to perform the rites of Hajj. He should perform the subsequent rites in the following order.
1. On the Day of Tarwiyah,[1] that is, 8 Dhul-Hijjah, those performing Tamattu‘ Hajj and those among the residents of Makkah who intend to perform Hajj should assume ihram for Hajj and proceed to Mina. On the other hand, those who have come from beyond the miqat having assumed ihram for Ifrad or Qiran Hajj should proceed to Mina while remaining in ihram.
2. Before assuming ihram anew, he should try to perform the Sunnah practices of ihram, such as cleaning himself, taking a bath and applying perfume, just as he did previously when assuming ihram for ‘Umrah from the miqat.
3. Thereafter, they should put on the ihram garments at their respective places of residence.
4. Then, if it is possible to assume ihram after an obligatory prayer, that is preferable. If there is no prayer at that time, but it is possible to perform wudu, it is preferable to offer two rak‘ahs of Tahiyyat al-Wudu after performing wudu and then assume ihram. If even that is not possible, there is no problem; merely making the intention will suffice.
5. Then, after making the intention for Hajj in the heart, he should begin the rites of Hajj by saying لَبَّيْكَ حَجًّا (Labbayka hajjan).
6. If he fears that some obstacle may prevent him from completing Hajj, he should say immediately after the Talbiyah,
اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي
(Allahumma mahilli haythu habastani)
‘O Allah, wherever You cause me to be held back, there I shall come out of ihram.’[2]
7. If it is Hajj performed on behalf of another person, he should make that intention in his heart and say on behalf of the person for whom he is performing Hajj,
عَنْ .. لَبَّيْكَ حَجًّا (Labbayka hajjan ‘an...) (I recite Labbayk on behalf of so-and-so, male/female.) [3]
8. After reaching Mina, he should perform the Zuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers, and the Fajr prayer of the following day. It is Sunnah to perform these prayers in Mina. Each prayer should be performed at its prescribed time. Each four-rak‘ah prayer should be performed as two rak‘ahs. The prayers should not be combined here; that is, the prayers of two times should not be performed together, because the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did not perform the prayers of two times together in Mina.
9. It is recommended to rest on this day and prepare for Hajj, engage in dhikr and seek forgiveness, and recite the Talbiyah frequently. If time and opportunity permit, he should study the rulings and issues related to Hajj. He should listen to the sermons and advice of knowledgeable scholars and their explanations and analyses concerning Hajj.
10. Spending the night of 9 Dhul-Hijjah in Mina is Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, spent this night in Mina. If, for some reason, spending the night there is not possible, there is no problem. Allah Most High will grant reward according to the intention, in sha Allah.
[1]. The 8th of Dhul-Hijjah is called Yawm al-Tarwiyah. Yawm al-Tarwiyah means the Day of Providing Water. Since there was no water in Mina, on this day the pilgrims would drink water, take water with them, and also give water to their riding animals. Therefore, this day is called the Day of Providing Water. Ibn Qudamah, Al-Mughni: 314.
