Sa‘i means running. Very close to the Ka‘bah are two small hills, one called Safa and the other Marwah. Between these two hills, Mother Hajar went back and forth in search of water for her infant son Isma‘il. It is in this very place that those performing Hajj and ‘Umrah must make sa‘i. Although its literal meaning is running, technically it means walking at a normal pace. Only in the section marked by the two green pillars should one move at a slightly faster, running pace. Women, however, should not run.
