The main task of the pilgrims on this day is to stone the Jamarat. They must perform the stoning in the following manner:
As on the eleventh, they must first stone the small Jamrah near Masjid al-Khayf. According to the previously described method, they must throw seven pebbles one by one, saying “Allahu Akbar” each time. After finishing the stoning, they should move aside a little, face the Qiblah, and make du‘a.
Then they must stone the middle Jamrah. According to the previously described method, they must throw seven pebbles one by one, saying “Allahu Akbar” each time. After finishing the stoning, they should move to the left, face the Qiblah, and make du‘a.
Then they must stone the large Jamrah, namely Jamrat al-‘Aqabah. According to the previously described method, they must throw seven pebbles one by one, saying “Allahu Akbar” each time. After finishing the stoning, they must leave this place. There is no du‘a here.
Pilgrims departing early must leave Mina before sunset on this day. If the sun sets, they should not leave. In that case, the ruling applicable to pilgrims departing later will apply to them. Therefore, they will spend the night and stone the Jamarat the following day. This is because Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,
«مَنْ غَرَبَتْ لَهُ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ أَيَّامِ التَّشْرِيقِ وَهُوَ بِمِنًى فَلَا يَنْفِرَنَّ حَتَّى يَرْمِيَ الْجِمَارَ مِنْ الْغَدِ»ََََ.
“If the sun sets while a person is in Mina in the middle of the Days of Tashriq (the twelfth), he should not leave Mina the following day without stoning the Jamarat.”[1]
If pilgrims departing early prepared and tried to leave but were unable to do so for some reason, or if the sun set while they were on the way, then according to the majority of scholars they will still be regarded as pilgrims departing early and may leave. Likewise, if pilgrims departing early leave any of their belongings in Mina and leave Mina before sunset, they may return and collect them. They will not have to remain until the following day for this reason.
With this act, the pilgrims departing early will complete the rites of Hajj. Only the Farewell Tawaf will remain. A detailed discussion of it follows.
