Al-Baqi Cemetery
Madinah
Madinah’s ancient and principal cemetery, located adjacent to the eastern side of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Burials began here after the Hijrah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself came here many times and made du‘a for those buried in the graves. Members of his family, many Companions including ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), Tabi‘in, and residents of Madinah from later generations are buried here. The word “Baqi‘” comes from the name of a type of tree found in the area. The cemetery has been in use for centuries, and its area has expanded over time. At present, the graves are marked with plain stones, and there are no structures. Entry is open to male visitors at designated times.
