The Plain of Uhud and the Cemetery of the Martyrs
Madinah
About five kilometers north of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi lies a vast plain at the foot of Jabal Uhud. In the third year of the Hijrah, the Muslims fought the Quraysh forces here. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had stationed a group of archers on the nearby small hill, Jabal al-Rumah, to guard the rear; when many of them left their positions at one stage of the battle, the situation changed. Seventy Companions were martyred in this battle, among them Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), the uncle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The martyrs were buried on the battlefield itself, and that cemetery remains preserved to this day. Hadith mention the love of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for Jabal Uhud. Today, the cemetery is enclosed by a wall and can be viewed from outside.
