Historical Places
Arafat and Masjid Namirah
Makkah
A vast, level plain located approximately twenty kilometers southeast of al-Masjid al-Haram, beyond the boundaries of the Haram. Remaining here from after the sun passes its zenith until sunset on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah is the principal pillar of Hajj; it is stated in a hadith, “Hajj is Arafat.” During the Farewell Hajj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered his historic sermon in this plain. On the eastern side of the plain is a small hill called Jabal al-Rahmah. At its western edge is Masjid Namirah, where the Hajj sermon is delivered on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah and the Zuhr and Asr prayers are performed together. Since the western section of the mosque lies outside the boundaries of Arafat, staying there is not counted as wuquf. For the rest of the year, the entire area remains almost deserted.
