After completing sa‘i, shorten or shave the hair of your head. During the Farewell Hajj, the Companions performing tamattu‘ shortened their hair. It is stated in the hadith,
«فَحَلَّ النَّاسُ كُلُّهُمْ وَقَصَّرُوْا»
‘Then all the people came out of ihram and shortened their hair.’[1] Accordingly, it is preferable for a pilgrim performing tamattu‘ to shorten the hair of his head after ‘umrah, so that he may shave his head after Hajj. If there is no hair at all on the head, he should simply run a razor over it. After shortening or shaving the hair, take a bath and put on normal stitched clothes. Remain out of ihram until 8 Dhul-Hijjah. Women should trim the length of a fingertip from the ends of each lock of hair, but no more than that.[2]
By completing the above acts, the muhrim’s ‘umrah will be complete. If he is performing tamattu‘ Hajj or an independent ‘umrah, everything that was prohibited for him while in ihram will become lawful. However, if he is performing qiran or ifrad Hajj, he should not shorten or shave his hair at this time. Rather, he should remain in ihram until the first release from ihram after stoning on 10 Dhul-Hijjah (the Day of Sacrifice).
During this time, engage abundantly in righteous deeds such as repentance and seeking forgiveness, salah, charity and tawaf. This applies especially to the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, during which righteous deeds earn far greater reward than at other times.
