Allah Most High showed Ibrahim (peace be upon him) the boundaries of the Haram through Jibril. Following Jibril’s instructions, he erected boundary markers. These remained unchanged until the conquest of Makkah. That year, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Tamim ibn Asad al-Khuza‘i to renovate them. Later, during his caliphate, ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent four men from the Quraysh to renovate them again. Allah Most High designated the boundaries of the Haram in honour of al-Bayt al-‘Atiq, that is, the Ka‘bah, and declared it a sanctuary. Within this designated area, people, all animals and birds, and even trees, plants and vines are safe. The virtue of righteous deeds here is far greater than in all other places. The boundaries of the Haram extend all around Makkah, though the distance is not equal in every direction. At present, signs indicating the boundaries of the Haram have been installed on the main roads entering Makkah. They are as follows:
To the west, on the road to Jeddah, up to a place called ‘Ash-Shumaysi’, which is known as al-Hudaybiyyah. It is located 22 km from Makkah.
To the south, on the road to Yemen through ‘Tihamah’, up to a place called ‘Ida‘at Libn’. It is located 12 km from Makkah.
To the east, up to the western edge of a place called ‘Wadi ‘Uyaynah’. It is located 15 km from Makkah.
To the north-east, on the road to ‘Ji‘irranah’, up to the village of Shara’i Mujahidin, which is located 16 km from Makkah.
To the north, up to a place called ‘Tan‘im’. It is located 7 km from Makkah. There is now a mosque there which is popularly known as Masjid ‘A’ishah.
