1. There is no requirement to be in or out of the state of ihram when shaving the head or shortening the hair. That is, the pilgrim may shave his own head or shorten his own hair. Even before exiting ihram himself, he may shave another person’s head or shorten another person’s hair.
2. The entire head must be shaved, or the hair over the entire head must be shortened. Removing only a small amount of hair will not suffice, because this can be called neither shaving nor shortening.
3. Nothing else may be substituted for shaving the head or shortening the hair.
4. It is permissible to delay shaving the head until the last day of sacrifice.
5. Women should shorten hair from all over the head by the length of one fingertip, that is, one finger-joint, which is approximately 2 centimetres.
6. Once the pilgrim has thrown the pebbles, slaughtered the animal, and shaved his head or shortened his hair, all other prohibitions associated with ihram, except sexual intercourse, will become lawful for him.
7. From this point onward, the pilgrim may wear stitched clothing, use perfume, and so on. However, kissing and sexual intercourse between husband and wife will still not be lawful. These will become lawful only after Tawaf al-Ifadah or Tawaf al-Ziyarah. At that point, the pilgrim will have completely exited ihram.
