Tawaf al-Ifadah by a Menstruating Woman

1 min readLast updated September 11, 2026

A menstruating woman must not perform tawaf until she becomes pure. Apart from tawaf, she may perform all the other rites of Hajj, such as staying at Arafah, spending the night at Muzdalifah, stoning the pillars, offering the sacrifice, and making du‘a and dhikr. However, she must not perform tawaf until the bleeding stops. Once the bleeding stops, she should complete Tawaf al-Ziyarah. In this case, no dam is required. If, for a valid reason, a menstruating woman cannot wait until she becomes pure to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah, and there will be no opportunity for her to perform Tawaf al-Ziyarah later, she should perform ghusl, use a sanitary pad or something similar to prevent the blood from flowing, and perform tawaf. This is because Allah Most High does not command anyone to do what is beyond their ability.[1] Moreover, it is permissible to use medication to stop menstrual bleeding, provided it does not cause physical harm.

[1]. Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that no dam will be obligatory upon the woman for this.
