Some rulings concerning the throwing of pebbles

1 min readLast updated September 10, 2026

1. The pebbles must be thrown at the target by raising the hand or lifting the arm in such a way that it can be called throwing. Merely placing them there is not sufficient.

2. Throw the pebbles consecutively, one after another. Do not take a long pause. There is no problem with a brief pause. Do not pause unless there is crowding or some other problem.

3. It is not appropriate to throw more than seven pebbles as a precaution due to doubt. However, if any pebble falls outside the target area, another should be thrown again.

4. Objects other than pebbles, such as gold, ceramic, iron, dried earth, and the like, may not be thrown.

6. If there is doubt about how many times one has thrown, the lower number will be taken into account. However, baseless doubt will not be considered; it should be disregarded and dismissed.

7. If someone is certain that he has thrown only six pebbles, he must complete the seven. If, after finishing the stoning and leaving, he becomes certain that he had thrown only six pebbles, then the precautionary course is to make up the seventh throw on the following day. If someone does not make it up, it is preferable to give some charity.

8. After throwing pebbles at the large Jamrah, do not raise your hands to make du‘a.
