The Method of Throwing Pebbles

1 min readLast updated September 10, 2026

Proceed towards the Jamarat while reciting the Talbiyah. Throw 7 pebbles at the third Jamrah from the Mina side and the first from the Makkah side, which is called Jamarat al-‘Aqabah or Jamarat al-Kubra (the Greater Jamrah). Stand with the Ka‘bah to your left and Mina to your right; standing in this manner is Sunnah. However, it is permissible to throw from any other direction as well. Saying Allahu Akbar (اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ), throw each pebble separately. Throw the pebbles with humility and reverence. Remember that the pebbles must fall within the target area, namely, against the pillar or inside the basin. Throwing pebbles is one of the symbols of Allah. For Allah the Exalted has said,

﴿وَمَن يُعَظِّمۡ شَعَٰٓئِرَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِن تَقۡوَى ٱلۡقُلُوبِ ٣٢ ﴾ [الحج: ٣٢]

‘And whoever honours the symbols of Allah—indeed, that is from the piety of the hearts.’[1] It is narrated from ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

«إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الطَّوَافُ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَرَمْىُ الْجِمَارِ لإِقَامَةِ ذِكْرِ اللهِ».

‘The circumambulation of the House of Allah, the Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah, and the throwing of pebbles at the Jamarat have been prescribed solely to establish the remembrance of Allah.’[2] Therefore, it is essential to remain calm and composed while throwing the pebbles, so that the symbols of Allah are not dishonoured. One should never throw shoes or large stones out of anger or rage; rather, this is a grave mistake. Some people believe that Satan is tied at the Jamarat, but this is not correct. Such claims have no basis.
