The Virtue of Slaughtering the Hady or Offering a Sacrifice

1 min readLast updated September 10, 2026

The virtue of slaughtering the hady has been described in various hadiths. For example,

  • The best Hajj is that in which the blood of a hady or sacrificial animal is shed. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked, “Which Hajj is the best?” He replied,

الْعَجُّ ، وَالثَّجُّ

“Raising the voice in the talbiyah and shedding the blood of an animal.”[1]

  • The reward for shedding the blood of an animal will remain stored with Allah. It is mentioned in a hadith that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,

«وَأَمَّا نَحْرُكَ ، فَمَذْخُورٌ لَكَ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ»

“And as for your shedding the blood of an animal, it will remain stored with Allah for you.”[2]

  • The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, also slaughtered animals himself. It is mentioned in a hadith,

«وَنَحَرَ النَّبِى صلى الله عليه وسلم بِيَدِهِ سَبْعَ بُدْنٍ قِيَامًا».

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, performed nahr (slaughter) on seven camels with his own hand while they were standing.”[3]

Therefore, slaughtering an animal is a virtuous deed. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did it himself and encouraged others to do so.
